Over the last decade or so there has been a big change in the way people shop, and more and more have been falling into extreme debt, especially at Christmas time. Credit cards are the preferred spending mode and this can become a considerable debt problem if not suitably tackled, but it doesn’t have to get to this stage.
We all know that Christmas is the time of year when you spend the most on presents for friends and relations and therefore we know that we are going to need more money to cover it. With this in mind, the obvious and sensible thing to do is to try and budget your expenditure so that you do not ruin yourself just to make your Christmas a jolly time.
Firstly, try to start your Christmas shopping early - late September or early October is a great time to do this. As a result, this should enable you to spread the expenditure so that you don’t wind up with substantial outgoings in December and with a bit of luck reduce the need to use your credit cards.
It is also useful beneficial to put together a list of what you want to buy for people and keep a record of whom you have bought what. Try to wrap the presents early and keep them someplace secure so that they do not get broken. If you have Internet at home, then you should really think about buying on the web as you can get some great bargains which can save you a pretty penny.
Try to only shop within your budget, and don’t buy presents that you cannot afford. This can be hard when there is a great deal of lure about and it can be particularly problematic if you have kids that you don’t want to disappoint. You should, however try to consider the long term and manage your spending to prevent a dismal beginning to the new year with a great deal of debt.
